Museum for the Danish navy
Naval History
Figureheads, old sailing ships, models and modern missile torpedo boat. At the Royal Danish Naval Museum you can sense both the smell of the sea and gunpowder, when walking through the Danish fleet’s history from the 1500s and up to the present.
Vessels and photographs
The Royal Danish Naval Museum has rich collections that shed light on the history of the navy from different angles. Apart from the large artillery and weapons collection the museum also exhibits uniforms, ship accessories, instruments, vessels, maritime art and photographs – objects that all tell the story of life in the navy since the 1600s. One of the museums latest acquisitions is the submarine “the Seal” (Sælen), which became known in Denmark as a part of the Danish contribution to the Iraq war.
Ships for 300 years
One of the museum’s special attractions is the collection of more than 400 original models of ships, reflecting 300 years of marine engineering development. The historical model collection includes models of ships, ship ornaments and mechanical contraptions, dating all the way back to 1669. Several of the models are among the finest in the world.
Try it for yourself…
At the Royal Danish Naval Museum you find a “children’s ship”, which was constructed after the original vessel drawings from the epoch of large sailing ships. You are welcome to go onboard the ship where the cannons stand ready to be fired.
Maritime surroundings
It is not just inside the Royal Danish Museum the sea sets its mark. The museum is situated in beautiful and maritime surroundings – right next to the Christianshavn Canal. A visit to the Museum is a good opportunity to take a walk around the old Christianshavn quarter of Copenhagen, where you also pass by the museums Little Mill, the North Atlantic House and the Bank & Savings Museum.
