Museum of Danish building culture and everyday life in the rural areas

A tour of Denmark in one afternoon

Frilandsmuseet, the Open-Air Museum, in Northern Copenhagen is one of the world’s largest and oldest public museum grounds. The Museum includes more than 100 rural buildings from the period 1650 to 1950, spread out over a large scenic area. This makes it possible to go on a tour of all of Denmark, both geographically and historically, in a single afternoon – in spite of being in the city close to the centre of Copenhagen.

Visit the miller and the squire

As a visitor you can walk directly into the accurately recreated houses and buildings. You can pay a visit to the peasant, miller, lady of the manor and the ordinary resident of the village. All the houses are fully furnished with furniture, tools and textiles. You can see how the residents slept, where they ate and what surroundings greeted them when they woke up in the morning or came home from a day’s work.

Around the area you will also encounter people in historical clothes, making the past come alive. The Museum’s many animals, such as ducks, goats and sheep, likewise attribute to this - to the merriment of the Museum’s younger visitors.

Have a picnic in the middle of history

The Museum is currently constructing another village with buildings from the period1880-1950, a period characterised by the co-operative movement. Here you will be able to visit one of the first versions of a co-operative store, complete with shop premises, living quarters and meeting house.

In nice weather the charming open surroundings are perfect for a picnic in between the fine half-timbered houses, thatched farmhouses and buildings from the 1600 and onwards. The museum is thus a perfect place for the whole family to visit on a warm spring- or summer day.
